Michigan CAFO Permits on Public Notice

NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) permits have 30-day public comment periods for individual permits and 14-day public comment periods for general permits.

Public notice for Michigan CAFO permits is posted on the MiEnviro Portal. EGLE lists the start and end date of public notice for each permit.

Any member of the public can submit written comments to EGLE within the public comment period for CAFO permits. Submit comments online through EGLE’s MiEnviro Portal or mail them to: Permits Section, Water Resources Division, EGLE, Box 30458, Lansing, Michigan 48909. Find more detailed instructions here.

Anyone can request that EGLE hold a public hearing on a CAFO permit by writing via email (raasakkag1@michigan.gov) or physical mail (Grant Raasakka, Permits Section, WRD, EGLE, P.O. Box 30458, Lansing, Michigan 48909-7958); telephone: 517-599-3232.

The request should include specific reasons for the request, indicating which portions of the proposal constitute the need for a hearing.

If submitted comments indicate significant public interest in the proposal or if useful information may be produced, EGLE may, at its discretion, hold a public hearing on the proposal. If a public hearing is scheduled, public notice of the hearing will be provided at least 30 days in advance.
