SRAP reviewed three decades of public records and found that Smithfield’s factory farms spilled more than 7.3 million gallons of hog waste on land and waterways across Missouri.

Over the past 15 years, Smithfield’s concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) caused an average of 28 spills per year in Missouri, totalling more than 300,000 gallons of waste annually.

SRAP’s report, The Rap Sheet on Smithfield’s Industrial Hog Facilities in Missouri, exposes Smithfield’s history as a chronic polluter—and the Missouri Department of Natural Resource’s failure to enforce regulations designed to protect public health and the environment.
