What if it came to your town? Since 2014, Maricopa County residents in Tonopah and Arlington have had their lives severely impacted by the intrusion of massive Hickman Family Farms egg production operations near their homes, schools, businesses and public spaces. The ‘family farm’ houses more than 4.5 million birds — and will eventually reach the goal of more than twice that number. The industrial-scale operations produce dangerous and prohibited levels of ammonia emissions, and impact local residents with unbearable odors and an array of public health risks from the massive amounts of airborne fecal matter particulate, feathers, dust, dander and allergens.
Residents and the community group STOPP have registered multiple complaints and entered into several County processes to oppose the continuing community impacts of the Hickman operations. Five years later, the Hickman facilities continue to run — and local residents continue to fight against the harsh impacts that come from being the unwilling host to a factory farm.
The story of Tonopah is now featured in the new Hourglass Films documentary, RIGHT TO HARM.
